Based on interviews, examines the personal background, characteristics, and motives of ca. 40 Dutch people who hid Jewish children during World War II, and of the experiences of ca. 50 Jewish children during their period in hiding. Discusses the preparations, the situation in hiding, the changes of address, and the development of personal relationships between the adults and the children during and after the war. Stresses the childrens' capacity to adapt to their new environment. Ca. 16 "hiding parents" participated in other forms of resistance as well. 34 children were subject to various forms of Christianization; seven converted. Notes the presence of antisemitic prejudices among some hiding parents. A minority of the children mentioned postwar antisemitic remarks; five children emigrated to Israel due to antisemitism. Concludes that many of the "hiding parents" can be said to have altruistic personalities with a drive to help others.
